Engineer 1
Job Summary:
The position is assists with installations, maintenance, and equipment operation at the farm and lab (the facility), including safety, environmental safety, maintenance, repairs, and operating procedures and practices. Supports facility modifications, fabrication and assembly, equipment installation, daily farming operations, and laboratory equipment maintenance and modifications. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results.
With consultative direction, this position exercises latitude in determining development and solutions for designated investigations or projects. Assists with formulating plans, typically multi-year, for solution development, documentation, and deployment of the scientific or technical solutions. Evaluates the integration of the solution within the overall scientific environment; and responsible for planning and overseeing documentation, testing, maintenance, and equipment updates. Recognized to possess authoritative knowledge on the concepts, principles and methods in their specific field of engineering or science.
Essential Functions:

Works in a group environment (indoor and outdoor) to provide oversight, monitoring, and execute daily workflow activities at the Shandon Algae Farm and Lab

Assists technical team by providing input to goals and objectives for the facility

Supports technical team with grant applications

Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required

Coordinates the facility schedule for maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and modifications with other technical and executive staff

Assists with fabrication, assembly, and installation of experimental and commercial equipment
-
Develop and oversee facility equipment maintenance plans
-
Determines staffing needs and other resources at the facility to accomplish goals

Directs the activities of technicians and less experienced professionals
-
Participate in planning experiments including test plan preparation, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions

Collaborate with technical team on developing, optimizing, and testing cultivation methods
-
Anticipate and evaluate improvements in the procedures, policies, analytical methods, data collection, data reporting, workflow, safety protocols, and environmental management in the algae strain research, development, seed production, and culturing methods

Assists with planning experiments including test plan preparation, analytical methods and laboratory or farm protocols, trouble-shooting problems, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions

Works closely with technical team to anticipate and evaluate improvements needed

Design system components, and modifications to accomplish technical goals

Design, build, install, troubleshoot, analyze, and repair systems

Identify, diagnose, and propose solutions to issues or problems within the processes
-
Feeds algae ponds, performs pond transfers and harvesting
-
Reads diagrams, process sheets, and assembly and schematic drawings
-
Operates the Zobi Harvester and oversees harvests

Operation of the biological and analytical laboratories
-
Uses and maintains farm equipment; cleans outdoor ponds, tanks, and sumps as needed

Uses and maintains lab equipment, such as UV-Vis spectrophotometers, gravimetric instruments, and elemental analyzers

Devise new approaches to resolve unusual or complex scientific problems

Records information on appropriate production records, logs and other report forms; provides inputs to reports as required

May represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects

Communicates needs with Coach in a timely manner to ensure Company objectives are met

Interacts with co-workers, suppliers, customers, and partners in a professional, considerate, and respectful manner

Fosters an environment of safety, camaraderie, and integrity in all aspects of work

Qualifications, Skills and Physical Demands:
-
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or Ph.D. in Scientific, Engineering or related technical field. Typical minimum experience is zero to five years. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

Must be able to work weekends, extended hours, and travel as required
-
Must be able to remain in a stationary position and use a computer or equipment for most of the day
-
Must be able to work outdoors all day in outdoor weather conditions, traverse algae farm, ascend/descend ladders, and remain in a stationary position

Positions self at ground level to perform tasks such as equipment maintenance and sample collection
-
Must be able to work indoors in the lab traversing the lab while performing tasks such as transporting samples
-
Must be able to move 50 pounds at one time, multiple times throughout the workday

Willing to work in or near unusual environments such as pressurized air, high voltage, microwave energy, heat, cryogens, water ponds, high places, and heavy objects.

Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, interpersonal, leadership, organization, and presentation skills

Computer literate and able to effectively work with applications pertinent to position objectives

Must be able to communicate via phone, video conference, email and in-person with co-workers and business contacts

Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and learn new concepts quickly

Must be able to think strategically and have the ability to use independent judgment

Must be able to maintain confidentiality

Pay Range: $66,560 to $83,200 per year
