Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

 

Job Summary: This position is responsible for researching, designing, developing, and installing devices and systems for automation at algae farms and labs. These approaches will be applied for algae cultivation and processing as well as manufacturing of equipment and instrumentation. Assignments are normally outlined in terms of overall objectives and anticipated results. Work is reviewed at milestones or at completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Document findings, communicate results to team, and may represent the organization as the prime technical contact on small contracts or single component projects. Provide directions to technicians and may lead a team of moderately experienced professionals. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues.

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Executes instrument and controls engineering design activities for minor to major scale projects at multiple production sites

  2. Provides controls systems and instrumentation design deliverables for the project(s) in the front end, detailed design, construction, and start-up phases

  3. Provides troubleshooting, support and maintenance for control systems and instrumentations 

  4. Works with a team of instrument and controls engineers and designers in the execution of design and interfaces with a multi-discipline project teams consisting of project manager, electrical, and end users.

  5. Develops PLC and HMI programming design deliverables as well as commissioning and startup support of those design deliverables

  6. Develops instrumentation engineering/design deliverables, including instrument index, instrument data sheets, instrument installation details, instrument location plans, wiring diagrams, and loop diagrams

  7. Develops controls design deliverables, including I/O list, process control narratives, and control panel design

  8. Works with electrician or electrical engineer to develop electrical design deliverables including 480VAC and below equipment power design, installation plan drawings, and conductor schedules

  9. Develops I&C purchase specifications, reviews bids, and makes technical recommendations 

  10. Applies knowledge of commonly used I&C engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the engineering services industry

  11. Interfaces directly with construction personnel in development of contracts and execution of work

  12. Provides leadership and guidance to less experienced team members

  13. Provides the specification of the various types of instruments for flow, pressure, temperature and level

  14. Develops design calculations, project studies, and report preparation

  15. Performs quality reviews of project design submittals

  16. Performs quality review of the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, and field inspections 

  17. Interfaces directly with offsite design office and coordinates and tracks execution of all electrical controls department work to that office

  18. Integrates package equipment and for the design of the balance of the plant 

  19. Prepares, reviews, and/or approves of equipment and material specification data sheets and submits purchase requisitions for approval

  20. Reviews and comments on process flow diagrams and piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs) from controls perspective

  21. Participates in failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and process hazard analysis (PHA) to consider equipment, personnel, and environmental safety

  22. Evaluates vendor bids and vendor submittals/drawings to assure compliance with specifications

  23. Communicates equipment design to project personnel and other disciplines

  24. Participates in plant start-ups and field assignments as required; can include equipment inspections at vendor facilities

  25. Provides technical guidance to CAD designer/drafters, designers, and lower-level engineers working on the same project

  26. Travels between employer and customer work sites often; current employer worksites include Kauai, Paso Robles and Illinois

  27. Communicates needs with Coach in a timely manner to ensure Company objectives are met

  28. Interacts with co-workers, suppliers, customers, and partners in a professional, considerate, and respectful manner

  29. Fosters an environment of safety, camaraderie, and integrity in all aspects of work

  30. Observes all laws, regulations, other applicable obligations, and company ethical standards while on duty, wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the company

  31. Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices

  32. Notify human resources of any activities that could violate or have the appearance of violating laws, regulations, obligations, ethical standards, potentially unsafe working conditions, procedures, or practices

 

 

Qualifications, Skills and Physical Demands

  • Degree in Controls Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering (or related field). Typical minimum experience is at least 8 years.

  • Must have experience in the development of P&IDs and working with management and end users to define and show proper scope of the project

  • Must have experience in development of instrumentation and value specifications

  • Must have experience in the design of programable logic controls (PLC) or distributed control system (DCS) based control systems

  • Must have experience in the box and logic design of industrial manufacturing facilities

  • Proficiency in utilizing CAD and other PC software packages typically associated with engineering is preferred but not required

  • Expertise in National Electric Code requirements for industrial facilities and hazardous locations is desired but not required

  • Must be able to work weekends, extended hours, and travel

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position and use a computer or equipment for most of the day

  • Must be able to work outdoors all day in outdoor weather conditions, traverse algae farm, ascend/descend ladders, and remain in a stationary position 

  • Positions self at ground level to perform tasks such as equipment maintenance and sample collection

  • Must be able to work indoors in the lab traversing the lab while performing tasks such as transporting materials

  • Must be able to move 50 pounds at one time, multiple times throughout the workday

  • Willing to work in or near unusual environments such as pressurized air, high voltage, microwave energy, heat, cryogens, water ponds, high places, and heavy objects.

  • Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, interpersonal, leadership, organization, and presentation skills

  • Must be experienced with computers and able to effectively work with applications pertinent to position objectives, including but not limited to Microsoft office suite, HMI, and RSLinks

  • Must be able to communicate via phone, video conference, email and in-person with co-workers and business contacts

  • Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment and learn new concepts quickly

  • Must be able to think strategically and have the ability to use independent judgment

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality
