Engineer

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for determining and developing effective approaches for research, development, design, testing, automation, and operation.  These approaches will be applied for algae cultivation and processing as well as manufacturing of equipment and instrumentation for algae facilities.

Essential Functions:

1.    Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

2.    Work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices, including reviewing potential safety or hazards before starting activities.

3.    Contribute to interdisciplinary teams in a respectful and collaborative manner.

4.    Design, specify, and document experiments, equipment, and processes.

5.    Conduct experimental testing; analyze and document experimental results.

6.    Operate analytical, test, and production equipment.

7.    Troubleshoot, analyze and repair systems.

8.    Identify, diagnose, and propose solutions to issues or problems with processes or equipment.

9.    Lead teams, including technicians and other engineers or scientists.

10. Interact with suppliers, customers, and partners in a professional, considerate, and respectful manner.

Qualifications and Skills:

·     Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in chemical, mechanical, civil, or manufacturing engineering.

·     Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

·     Must be able to think strategically and have the ability to use independent judgment.

·     Must possess the ability to understand new concepts and quickly apply them accurately throughout an evolving technology.

·     Must have the ability to organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases, along with, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

·     Must have strong computer, documentation, presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

·     Preferred experience or training in automation, experimental design, mass and energy balances, computer aided design, safety/hazards analysis, and equipment or process specification.

·     Must be able to sit and use a computer for most of the day. 

·     Must be able to communicate via phone and email with colleges and business contacts daily. 

·     Must be able to work weekend shifts and extended hours.

·     Must be able to perform tests in laboratory or algae farm settings including moving and installing heavy experimental components or feedstock.

Technician

Job Summary:

Performs technician-level workflow activities, supporting facility modifications, light fabrication and assembly, equipment installation, daily farming operations, laboratory equipment operation and maintenance, and assisting with experimental data collection. 

Essential Functions:

1.    Performs daily assigned tasks per the operating supervisor.

2.    Reads diagrams, process sheets, and assembly and schematic drawings. 

3.    Assists in fabrication, assembly, and installation of basic experimental and commercial equipment.

4.    Uses and maintains farm equipment. Cleans outdoor ponds, tanks, and sumps as needed.

5.    Uses and maintains lab equipment. Such as UV-Vis spectrophotometers, gravimetric instruments, and elemental analyzers.

6.    Helps conduct experiments and tests according to pre-arranged procedures; records relevant data.

7.    Records information on appropriate production records, logs and other report forms. Provides inputs to reports as required.

Qualifications and Skills:

·     High school diploma or equivalent.

·     At least two years related work experience desired.

·     Experience with common hand tools.

·     Able to perform complex assignments with little or no direction.

·     Willing to work in or near unusual environments such as pressurized air, high voltage, microwave energy, heat, cryogens, water ponds, high places, and heavy objects.

·     Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field desired. 

·     Must be able to lift 50 pounds at one time; multiple times throughout the workday.

·     Must be able to work outdoors all day climbing ladders, walking, standing, and squatting.

·     Must be able to sit and work at a computer

·     Must be able to communicate via phone and email with co-workers.

·     Must be able to work weekend shifts and extended hours as required.

Associate Scientist

Job Summary:

Performs associate scientist-level role in workflow activities, requires working in the laboratory, and outdoors in the field. Primary responsibility will be collection of samples and daily analytical support of laboratory and algae farm operations. Candidate must be willing to work extended hours and on the weekends when required. 

Essential Functions:

1.    Collecting field samples.

2.    Organizing and conducting routine analyses independently and in compliance with applicable methods, protocols, and SOPs.

3.    Maintaining study documentation and laboratory records.

4.    Independently performing basic troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and software appropriate for assigned tasks.

5.    Performing peer review and QC review of data.

6.    Performing scheduled routine tasks on a daily basis and effectively completing multiple assignments.

7.    Maintaining a clean and safe laboratory work environment.

8.    Understanding data generated, and history of methods.

9.    Recognizing deviations from normal results and informing supervisor of any problems and/or deviations that may affect the integrity of the data and participating in corrective action of problems.

10. Identifying problems, determining appropriate actions, and implementing solutions with support or independently as appropriate.

11. Identifying critical steps in an assay.

12. May assist in optimizing and validating methods.

13. Performing other related duties as assigned.

14. Contributing to a cohesive team environment and planning individual workload in coordination with team members.

Qualifications and Skills:

·     Bachelor of Science in biology or chemistry.

·     At least three years of related work experience.

·     Able to work weekend shifts, and extended hours.

·     Must have strong communication, computer, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently on a self-initiated basis and as part of a team.

·     Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment.

·     Must be able to lift 50 pounds throughout the workday; multiple times a day.

·     Must be able to work indoors in the lab all day walking, standing, and sitting at a computer.

·     Computer literate with the knowledge of applications pertinent to position objectives.

·     Must be able to communicate via phone and email with co-workers.

·     Must be able to work weekend shifts and extended hours as required.

·      Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment.

·      Must be able to think strategically and have the ability to use independent judgment.
